WHAT IS TITLE 1?
Title 1 provides assistance for students who must accelerate their progress to perform at or near grade level. The Title 1 program is designed to provide students with extra help in an effort to bring their academic skills to the high, challenging academic standard needed to be successful in school. Title 1 resources are directed toward students who need them the most.
WHAT IS THE GOAL OF TITLE 1?
The goal of Title 1 is to help every child get a high quality education. The goal of LPOSD's Title 1 programs is to provide students with the basic reading skills they need to independently succeed in their classroom.
Reading achievement is a key focus Title 1 programs. Every student's
reading program should use proven teaching methods.
These proven teaching methods include:
Phonemic awareness
This teaches students how to hear and recognize sounds in words.
Phonics
This teaches the relationship between sounds and letters.
Vocabulary
Students are given words to study and to learn their meaning. Quizzes
and tests help check students understanding of these words. When
students understand the meaning of words comprehension increases.
Fluency
This means being able to read, understand, and pronounce text quickly
and accurately with expression and phrasing.
Comprehension
Students need to talk and write about what they read. This helps show
they understand, remember and can communicate what they read.
